In the past, Apple has been very secretive about its artificial intelligence (AI) work, but its research team has released a paper titled “Learning from Simulated and Unsupervised Images through Adversarial Training.” It describes a technique for training AI systems to recognize images using computer-generated pictures that are similar to real-world photos. It calls the technique Simulated+Unsupervised learning.
It’s unclear why Apple chose to begin sharing some of its research, but industry observers note that doing so could advance AI research as a whole as well as helping Apple attract more talent.
