Apple Hires Former Google AI and Search Head

Earlier this week, news broke that Google artificial intelligence (AI) and search chief John Giannandrea was leaving his position but would stay on at Google. Now it appears that Giannandrea isn’t staying with Google after all, and he will instead go to work for Apple. There he will be in charge of “machine learning and AI strategy,” reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook.

In a letter to Apple employees about the new hire, Cook said, “Our technology must be infused with the values we all hold dear. John shares our commitment to privacy and our thoughtful approach as we make computers even smarter and more personal.”

Apple has been seen as somewhat behind the other major technology companies when it comes to AI, so the new hire could be a big win for the company.
