A new report from Gartner Research reveals that smartphone manufacturers sold 122 million Android devices in the third quarter, giving it a 72 percent share of the market. That’s about a 100 percent year-over-year increase. By comparison, users purchased approximately five times as many Android devices as iOS devices during the quarter.
However, Gartner predicts that iOS sales will likely pick up during the fourth quarter, thanks to the holidays and the release of the new iPhone and iPads.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Phone remain very small slices of the smartphone market.
Overall, Gartner said mobile phone sales declined, but smartphone sales increased 40 percent.
