Google has announced Project Treble, a new feature in Android O that will “make it easier, faster and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android.”

Currently, manufacturers often have to make a myriad of code changes to their mobile devices before they can roll out the latest version of Android. As a result, the update process is slow, and manufacturers never get around to updating some devices at all. That leaves end users running a wide variety of different versions of the operating system, and if mobile development firms want to get their apps on those devices, they have to make sure that their apps are compatible with older versions of Android, as well as the newer versions.

Now, Google is saying that Project Treble will allow manufacturers to update device operating systems almost immediately, which could be a huge benefit for developers who have struggled with the fragmentation issue.
