One of the Americans released by Iran in the recent prisoner exchange was a 32-year-old game developer named Amir Mizra Hekmati. Iran first imprisoned Hekmati in 2011, when it said that he had confessed to collaborating with the CIA on “games with the aim of manipulating public opinion in the Middle East.” Hekmati’s family denied the report and said that he was only in Iran to visit his grandmother.

Before his imprisonment, Hekmati worked for Kuma Reality Games, a developer that makes “playable recreations of real events in modern combat” and combines “headline news with console-quality gameplay to place you on the frontlines of today’s battlefields.” He is also a former US Marin sergeant, and he had previously done contract development work for the Department of Defense.
