GitLab has published a new report titled “2016 Global Development Report – How Developers Work,” which finds that developers overwhelmingly prefer open source development tools. “98 percent of developers say they use open source tools, and 75 percent say at least half of their tools are open source,” it said.
Other key findings included the following:
- 81 percent of survey respondents said that it is critical for organizations to use the latest development tools; 36 percent would turn down a job if the employer didn’t use the latest tools.
- 44 percent of developers get to choose their own development tools.
- 71 percent said distributed version control systems (Git repositories) are very important.
- Developers also indicated that waterfall and Agile software development methodologies are falling out of favor as they move on to conversational work styles.
