67% of Mobile App Developers Don’t Break Even

Promotion vendor AppPromo has released some sobering statistics about the mobile development industry: 67 percent of mobile developers aren’t breaking even with their apps, up from 59 percent last year. In addition, 68 percent of developers have earned less than $1,000 from their app, and 28 percent haven’t earned a dime. Despite the poor earnings, most developers say they aren’t considering abandoning their apps.

AppPromo says successful mobile developers have several characteristics in common:

  • Their apps are free.
  • They rely on ads and/or in-app purchases for income.
  • They’ve been around for at least three years.
  • They spend at least $1,000 per month on marketing.
  • They’ve earned $500,000 or more.
