No one would argue if you told them that Visual
Basic revolutionized Windows programming when it was released in 1991. VB made it very
easy and affordable for anyone to make their own Windows based applications. Today,
Visual Basic is arguably the most popular tool for Windows programming. But all that
popularity has created problems for the development tool.
With VB being so popular, the Windows application market is saturated. There are probably
as many people now creating Windows apps as we’re ever going to see. This brings on two
problems; how VB will evolve in the coming years, and if we will see a new development
tool.
There is no doubt that VB will continue to evolve and grow. With so many developers using
it, Microsoft would be foolish to stop rolling out new upgrades. It would be suicide. I
think VB will continue to grow, especially towards the Internet.
On that note, we can be pretty sure we will see a
new development tool. With the popularity of the Internet and the saturation of the
Windows development market, it only makes sense for Microsoft to create a "VB for the
Web". This coming fall we will see what Microsoft has planned to include in Visual
Studio 7.0, due out next year. I’d say it’s a safe bet that the new Internet tools will be
just like VB, revolutionary.
