A survey of over 14,150 respondents shows that despite today's tough economic climate, the average base salary for IT professionals rose from $73,900 to $81,600 in 2009—a 10% gain. In fact, 70% of those surveyed received a raise; the average raise was $5,077. Another 46% received a bonus; the average bonus was $8,575. In addition, the majority of IT professionals enjoyed good benefits, including 401K or retirement benefits, insurance, employer-paid training and profit sharing. At the same time, 57% of those surveyed felt they were underpaid.

According to the survey by Global Knowledge and TechRepublic, most IT professionals are happy with their jobs. Unsurprisingly, those most satisfied were those who were paid the most. About half those surveyed were in staff positions; the other half were supervisors or managers.

While age and experience levels remained approximately the same overall, the competition may have gotten a bit stiffer: the number of respondents with at least a 4-year college degree increased by 8 points over 2008. Training and certification were important factors in respondents' job performance and pay. Company size was also a factor: the larger the IT staff, the higher the pay. IT professionals working with a staff of less than five people earned an average of $68.8K, while those who worked with over 500 people earned an average of $97.7K.
