32,000 Game Players on a Single Web Game Server

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., August 6, 2001 – Zona, Inc., a massive multiplayer online game (MMOG) server solution provider, today announced that the company has developed a highly scalable, fault-tolerant server engine called Terazona(tm) for online 3D games capable of supporting tens of thousands of users on a server. Terazona is capable of supporting a minimum of 32,000 concurrent users per server. Currently, the legacy design cannot scale linearly due to network complexity. Existing server loads are unable to support more than 6,000 concurrent players.

The integrated server solution provides online video game publishers anddevelopers with:

High Scalability — Terazona will be one of the most powerful 3D Massive Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) servers in the world capable of supporting a minimum of 32,000 concurrent users per server. Currently, the legacy design cannot scale linearly due to network complexity. Existing server loads are unable to support more than 6,000 concurrent players. Terazona can start with very few server machines and increase the server capacity with an increased server base.

Fault Tolerance — Online video game players will not experience any downgrade to their game play experience within a growing base of concurrent users as clusters of fault-tolerant servers will be created as needed within the messaging infrastructure. Zona is the first company to develop a fault-tolerant server engine. Servers will be available 24/7/365 days a year.

Client and Server Agnostic — Zona’s framework server, Terazona, is adaptable to several toolkits such as those of set-top boxes, Windows PC, Sony PlayStations 2, Nintendo GameCube, and Microsoft Xbox. It is also server agnostic and can run on any OS and hardware.

Server Hosting — Zona, Inc., will form business alliances with various data center companies that will allow those companies to host the servers. The company will sponsor training programs on server maintenance for the licensees.

Low Cost Solution — Zona’s low cost per user beats competitors. Start-up hardware costs range from $4.50 (Zona) to $116.67 (competitor) on initial server costs. Zonas approach of distributed computing is much moreefficient than a centralized computing system.

On-Hand Developer Training — Zona, Inc., will be running training programs using newsletters, a specialized developer support web site, and developer conferences to educate developers on the standardized format of the Terazona platform. Toolkits will be distributed free of charge.

Supplementary Professional Services — Zona, Inc., will be providing additional consulting services to clients by request.

“Terazona is going to take online game play to the next level,” says Montgomery Singman, CEO and president of Zona, Inc. “We’re giving video game developers a chance to focus on development and not server, infrastructure and operational issues.”
