The Eclipse Foundation Will Take Over Java EE

Oracle is giving Java EE to the Eclipse Foundation. The company had previously announced that it no longer wanted to manage the open source technology and was looking for a foundation to handle those duties. After consulting with IBM, Red Hat and other Java partners, it settled on the Eclipse Foundation, known for its popular Java IDE.

"Moving Java EE to open governance and collaboration is going to be a process, not an event,” said Eclipse Executive Director Mike Milinkovich. "Our early discussions with Oracle, IBM, and Red Hat have shown that there is a lot of support for this among their leadership teams.”

As part of the transfer of ownership, Java EE will get a new branding strategy, likely including a new name.
