The 3 Biggest Clouds Report Earnings

The three largest cloud computing providers—Amazon, Microsoft and Google—all released their quarterly financial reports on the same day. Amazon noted that its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing service is now its most profitable business unit and is on a $14 billion annual run rate. It continues to add new customers and regions.

Microsoft reported that its commercial cloud revenue is on pace to generate $15.2 billion per year. However, that includes software as a service offerings like Office 365 in addition to its Azure cloud platform. The company emphasized its success with hybrid cloud deployments and cloud migrations.

Google did not break out numbers for Google Cloud Platform, but it did say the service is becoming more enterprise-friendly. "People sense our commitment to the area," said Google CEO Sundar Pichai. "They understand the pace at which we are investing. They see that we have committed to machine learning and AI at a deep level. In general, I think there is a very strong recognition that we have pivoted to a being a deep enterprise company and conversations are very strategic."
