Among its many other announcements at this week’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), Apple unveiled a new app designed to teach basic mobile development skills to kids. Called Swift Playgrounds, the iOS app helps young developers learn to write code in the Swift programming language.

“Swift Playgrounds is the only app of its kind that is both easy enough for students and beginners, yet powerful enough to write real code,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering. “It’s an innovative way to bring real coding concepts to life and empower the next generation with the skills they need to express their creativity.”

For now, the app is only available to Apple developers. It will go into public beta next month with the final version launching in the fall.
