Bad news for the mobile development industry: a new report from IDC showed that smartphone vendors shipped 403.5 million devices in the last quarter of 2017 — 6.3 percent less than in the previous year. The report wasn’t as bad for Apple, which IDC said passed Samsung to become the number one hardware vendor with 19.2 percent of the market.

A competing report from Strategy Analytics said that smartphone sales dropped 9 percent for the quarter — the biggest decline ever. Linda Sui, director at Strategy Analytics, said, “The shrinkage in global smartphone shipments was caused by a collapse in the huge China market, where demand fell 16 percent annually due to longer replacement rates, fewer operator subsidies and a general lack of ‘wow’ models.” The Strategy Analytics report had Samsung remaining the leading vendor worldwide with 21.6 percent of the market to Apple’s 14.7 percent.
