Slack Technologies, maker of the Slack collaboration software used by many enterprise application development teams, has announced that it has bought the rights to two rival products — HipChat and Stride — from Atlassian. Slack plans to shut down both competing services, and Atlassian, which makes many popular development tools, is investing in Slack. Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield said that the financial payments involved in the deal were “nominal” but that it was an important strategic move.

The agreement leaves Microsoft Teams as the chief competitor to Slack. Microsoft says that 200,000 organizations use teams, while Slack lays claim to 500,000.
