Germany’s two largest software companies, SAP and Software AG, this week announced plans to cooperate on the development of an open Smart City platform, which will enable cities and communities to implement Smart City and Smart Country projects on an independent basis.

“The platform is a coordinated interplay of Internet of Things, big data and artificial intelligence (AI) components and includes a development platform for smart applications,” the companies said in a statement. “It integrates existing data silos and is open for the solutions of other providers, from municipal enterprises and IT services providers to Smart City startups.”

At Germany’s recent Smart City Convention in Berlin, the two companies presented a showcase project in which a winter service vehicle delivers a wide range of real time data to the cloud, which is then available for processing on the SAP HANA platform.

“Smart countries and cities can only be achieved with the aid of a smart and open platform,” SAP head of public services and healthcare Susanne Diehm said in a statement.
