Samsung has announced that it is launching an Android app store of its own that is independent of Google Play. Called “Galaxy Apps,” the store will offer staff picks, a collection of top downloads, and a selection of exclusive deals that are only for Samsung device owners. It will include many apps that mobile development firms created using Samsung SDKs.

“At Samsung, we continuously strive to create value for our customers by providing differentiated solutions and services coupled with innovative devices,” WonPyo Hong, president of Samsung’s Media Solution Center, said. “Samsung Galaxy Apps is an extension of that promise, as it offers our customers exclusive apps to enrich their experience.”

Samsung has recently begun distancing itself from Google. Many industry watchers see the launch as another step in the same direction.
