Researchers Discover Vulnerability in 1600+ Android Apps

  • By Developer.com Staff

Security researchers at the University of Michigan found 1,632 Android apps, or about 6.8 percent of the all the apps in Google Play, have open ports. These open ports are problematic because in some cases they allow attackers to gain access to devices. In fact, the researchers found that 410 of the applications they studied were vulnerable to 956 potential exploits.

The report noted that about half of the apps with open port flaws had more than 500,000 downloads. Some had between 10 and 50 million downloads, and one comes pre-installed on Android smartphones.
