Citing unnamed sources, The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Google has “tens of engineers” working on creating a version of Android for virtual reality. Googlers Clay Bavor and Jeremy Doig are said to be leading the project. Bavor also worked on the company’s low-tech “Google Cardboard” virtual reality project.
Virtual reality devices have yet to take off, but the competition is heating up. Facebook has purchased VR headset maker Oculus Rift, and Microsoft recently unveiled its HoloLens technology. VR technology was also a big draw at the recent Games Developers Conference in San Francisco.
