Industry analysts at comScore have released their July 2014MobiLens and Mobile Metrix reports, which track key statistics related to the mobile development industry in the U.S. For the month, Android remained the top mobile operating system with 51.5 percent of the market, following by Apple (42.4 percent), Windows/Windows Phone (3.6 percent) and BlackBerry (2.3 percent). However, Apple was the number one smartphone manufacturer with 42.4 percent of the market, followed by Samsung (28.4 percent), LG (6.4 percent), Motorola (5.7 percent) and HTC (4.7 percent).
Other key takeaways from the report included the following:
- 173 million U.S. residents, or 71.8 percent of the mobile market, own smartphones, an increase of 3 percent since April.
- Facebook is the top smartphone app, reaching 71.6 percent of smartphone users.
- The next three most popular apps are all owned by Google: YouTube (53.7 percent), Google Play (51.7 percent) and Google Search (47.5 percent).
