The developers of an artificial intelligence called DeepStack say that their AI has beaten professional poker players at Texas Hold ‘Em. If the claim is true, it would be significant because poker requires more than just knowledge and tactics — it requires the computer system to understand and respond to human bluffing strategies. DeepStack is the result of work done by researchers at the University of Alberta and two universities in the Czech Republic.

Meanwhile, another group of researchers from Carnegie Mellon have announced that their AI, named Libratus, will take part in a $200,000 game against four poker professionals.

AI systems have already defeated professionals at the game of Go and the television game show Jeopardy.
