According to new data from App Annie, Apple’s App Store and Google Pay served almost 26 billion downloads in the third quarter — 8 percent more than during the same quarter last year. Revenues totaled nearly $17 billion.

Much of that growth has been fueled by Android’s expansion in developing markets, particularly India, where app downloads doubled year over year. Worldwide, Google Play expanded its download lead on the App Store; while Google Play had 115 percent more downloads than the App Store in Q3 2016, it had 125 percent more downloads in Q3 of 2017. However, the App Store expanded its lead on the revenue side, growing from 90 percent to 95 percent more consumer spending than Google Play.

App Annie forecasts that by 2021 the mobile development industry will see 240 billion downloads and generate $100 billion in revenue.
