The Tiobe Index of programming language popularity has a lot of familiar names at the top of the list this month. Java remained in first place with a 20.79 percent ranking, followed by C (12.38 percent), C++ (6.20 percent), Python (3.9 percent) and C# (3.79 percent).

Languages increasing in popularity included Python, which was fourth after placing fifth last month and sixth a year ago; Perl, which rose from 12th a year ago to eighth; Scala, which came in 30th; and Cobol, which was back in the top twenty. Languages on the decline included Ruby, which fell from eighth to 10th, and Groovy, which dropped out of the top twenty.

“The set of languages to choose from is getting bigger, and more and more less well-known programming languages are being adopted,” said the Tiobe report. “About 10 years ago, the first eight languages covered 80 percent of the market; now this is reduced to 55 percent.”
