The Oracle v. Google copyright lawsuit that has dragged on for years may finally be over. District Judge William Alsup of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California has denied Oracle’s request for a new trial.

In May, a jury found that Google had not infringed on Oracle’s copyright of Java by using Java APIs in Android. That decision meant Oracle did not receive the $9 billion in damages it had been seeking. Oracle appealed the earlier verdict on the grounds that it had new evidence related to a Google project called ARC++. The judge said that Google hadn’t concealed the ARC++, and that it was Oracle’s own fault if it didn’t know about the project.

The progress of the trial has been closely watched by the mobile development industry because of its bearing on Android and the larger question of fair use of APIs.
