Microsoft has announced that it is closing its open source subsidiary, MS Open Tech, and reintegrating the business unit back into the company. “Today, MS Open Tech has reached its key goals, and open source technologies and engineering practices are rapidly becoming mainstream across Microsoft,” blogged Jean Paoli, president of MS Open Tech. “It’s now time for MS Open Tech to rejoin Microsoft Corp., and help the company take its next steps in deepening its engagement with open source and open standards.”

Microsoft spun off Microsoft Open Tech as a separate subsidiary in 2012. Since then, the company has become much more active in the open source community. According to Paoli, the company’s employees now participate in about 2,000 open source projects.
