Paras Jha, 22, of Fanwood, New Jersey; Josiah White, 21, of Washington, Pennsylvania; and Dalton Norman, 22, of Metairie, Louisiana, have all been sentenced for crimes related to the Mirai botnet. The three men admitted to creating the Mirai strain, which created an enormous botnet used for clickfraud, distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks and other purposes.

The trio avoided all prison time by cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Instead, they will serve five years of probation and 2,500 hours of community service. They must also pay back $127,000 and give up some of their cryptocurrency, as well as continuing to assist the FBI and the cybersecurity industry, now as white-hat hackers.
