Microsoft to Shut Down CodePlex

Microsoft has announced that it will close down CodePlex, its website for sharing open source code. First launched in 2006, CodePlex will become read-only in October and will completely shut down December 15. "At that time, CodePlex.com will start serving a read-only lightweight archive that will allow you to browse through all published projects — their source code, downloads, documentation, license, and issues — as they looked when CodePlex went read-only. You'll also be able to download an archive file with your project contents, all in common, transferrable formats like Markdown and JSON," explained Microsoft vice president for cloud developer services Brian Harry.

Harry wrote, "Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of amazing options come and go but at this point, GitHub is the de facto place for open source sharing and most open source projects have migrated there." Microsoft is releasing its own open source projects on GitHub, and it is offering tools to help others migrate there.
