Microsoft announced on August 1that Windows 8 had reached the release to manufacturing (RTM) stage. That means PC and tablet makers are now able to download the code for the new operating system. Developers who subscribe to MSDN or TechNet will get their first chance to download the final code on August 15. Consumers will be able to begin buying Windows 8 systems on October 26.

Analysts say that in order to have a successful launch of Windows 8, Microsoft will need plenty of apps for the new Metro interface. A separate report said the Windows Store now has about 450 Metro apps.
