Tiobe has updated its programming language popularity index for May, and this month the big winners are Microsoft languages. The three languages making the biggest gains between last May and this May were C++ (now ranked third on the index), C# (now ranked fifth on the index) and Visual Basic.NET (now ranked eighth on the index). “These three programming languages are also the key languages of Microsoft’s Visual Studio,” said Tiobe. “Is this a coincidence? Microsoft’s Visual Studio is one of the few commercial programming environments that stood the test of time. Together with Eclipse it is one of the most frequently used IDEs in industry. So it is no wonder that C++, C#, and Visual Basic.NET are on the rise.”

On the other end of the spectrum, Objective-C, Scala and F# all saw their popularity decline this month. The top ten on the index were Java, C, C++, Objective-C, C#, Python, JavaScript, Visual Basic.NET, PHP and Visual Basic, in that order.
