The big — and surprising — news from Microsoft's Connect event in New York this week is that the software giant has joined the Linux Foundation as a platinum member. Although Microsoft has recently changed its tune about open source, the move was still largely unexpected from a company whose CEO once called Linux a cancer. Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, said that as a result of this move, "Microsoft is better able to collaborate with the open source community to deliver transformative mobile and cloud experiences to more people."

In another unanticipated move, Google announced that it will join Microsoft's .NET Foundation and will become a member of the steering committee.

Other news from Connect include the release of Visual Studio for Mac, SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1 and a release candidate for Visual Studio 2017.
