Microsoft has launched a new free edition of Visual Studio called Visual Studio Community 2013. In the past, Microsoft offered Visual Studio Express for free, but it had a very limited feature set. The community edition includes many more Visual Studio features, plus access to its 5,100+ extensions. TechCrunch explained, “It’s basically a full version of Visual Studio with no restrictions, except that you can’t use it in an enterprise setting and for teams with more than five people.”

Microsoft’s Executive Vice President of the Cloud and Enterprise group Scott Guthrie added, “Visual Studio is universally praised, but if you talk to a developer in college or straight out of college, they don’t want to pay. We want to eliminate that friction and enable more developers to use it on a day-to-day basis.”
