Microsoft has announced that it has purchased Semantic Machines, a startup focused on artificial intelligence (AI) that enables conversations. Microsoft said it will incorporate Semantic Machines’ speech synthesis, deep learning and natural language processing tools into Cortana and AI services available through its Azure cloud computing arm.

“With the acquisition of Semantic Machines, we will establish a conversational AI center of excellence in Berkeley to push forward the boundaries of what is possible in language interfaces,” Microsoft AI and research CTO David Ku said in a blog post.

Semantic Machines had some high-profile AI experts among its employees, including Apple’s former chief scientist for Siri Larry Gillick, UC Berkeley professor Dan Klein and Stanford University professor Percy Liang.
