Microsoft Buys PlayFab, Will Integrate Game Tools Into Azure

  • By Developer.com Staff

Microsoft has acquired PlayFab, a startup that offers cloud-based backend services for game developers. The company plans to integrate PlayFab's technology into its Azure cloud computing service in a bid to capture more business in the game development industry.

"As Satya Nadella noted in our annual shareholders meeting, 'We’re mobilizing to pursue our extensive opportunity in a 100-plus-billion gaming market,'" said Kareem Choudhry, corporate vice president of gaming at Microsoft. '"This means broadening our approach to how we think about gaming end to end, about starting with games and how they’re creating and distributed, and how they’re played and viewed.'"

PlayFab says that it offers services for 1,200 games used by more than 700 million players worldwide.
