Linus Torvalds, the creator and maintainer of Linux, has made a surprise announcement that he is stepping back from work on the Linux kernel for a time to work on his "unprofessional and uncalled for" behavior. The developer, who has earned a reputation for unleashing some blistering tirades on other programmers, made the announcement in an email to members of the open source community.

"I need to change some of my behavior, and I want to apologize to the people that my personal behavior hurt and possibly drove away from kernel development entirely," Torvalds said. "I am going to take time off and get some assistance on how to understand people's emotions and respond appropriately."

He added that he does plan to continue working on Linux in the future. During Torvalds' time off, Greg Kroah-Hartman will take over his responsibilities.
