Joyent Gives Node.js to a Foundation

Cloud computing vendor Joyent has announced that it will transfer ownership of the open source Node.js project to a new foundation. In addition to Joyent, IBM, Microsoft, PayPal, Fidelity and SAP will serve as founding members of the Node Foundation. “We will set this foundation up so it is representative of everyone who uses Node—individuals, hobbyists, companies large and small,” said Joyent CEO Scott Hammond.

Node.js is a very popular JavaScript framework. Recently, developers who work on the project had become dissatisfied with Joyent’s handling of Node.js and started a fork of the project called IO.js. There’s no word yet on whether the new foundation will entice those working on IO.js to come back to the main project.
