Java Still Top Programming Language in Terms of Book Sales Java book sales have climbed 13 percent this year.

There are a lot of different ways to calculate which programming languages are the most popular. While Java may have fallen to second place on Tiobe’s chart, which is based on Web data, Java is still the most popular programming languages in terms of book sales, says publishing firm O’Reilly. In fact, sales of all Java books (not just those published by O’Reilly) climbed 13 percent this year, good for a 14.45 percent share of the programming book market.

JavaScript came in second, with book sales climbing 27 percent year-over-year. In third and fourth, respectively, C# and Objective-C book sales both declined, despite having more books on the market. PHP book sales have dropped considerably, pushing the language from fifth on the list last year to sixth this year, behind C++.
