Java, C Drop in Tiobe Popularity Rankings

In the latest update to the Tiobe index of programming language popularity, Java and C remain the two most popular languages, but their ratings have dropped to their lowest point ever. Java had a 12.961 percent rating, six percentage points lower than a year ago, and C got a 6.477 percent rating, nearly five points lower than last year.

Another noteworthy change on the list was that Crystal, a Ruby variant, jumped from 60th to 32nd between July and August.

The top ten included the following:

  1. Java (12.961 percent share)
  2. C (6.477)
  3. C++ (5.55)
  4. C# (4.195)
  5. Python (3.692)
  6. Visual Basic .Net (2.569)
  7. PHP (2.293)
  8. JavaScript (2.098)
  9. Perl (1.995)
  10. Ruby (1.965)
