Mark Reinhold, chief architect of the Java Platform Group at Oracle, has sent a message to the OpenJDK mailing list proposing that Java 9’s release be pushed back until July 2017. He said that the developers need the additional time to work out the bugs in Project Jigsaw. “We’ve made a lot of progress on Project Jigsaw, the key feature of the release, over the last eight months,” he said. “Despite this progress, at this point it’s clear that Jigsaw needs more time. We recently received critical feedback that motivated a redesign of the module system’s package-export feature, without which we’d have failed to achieve one of our main goals. There are, beyond that, still many open design issues, which will take time to work through.”

Java 9 was originally scheduled for release in September 2016, but Reinhold had previously pushed it back until March 2017.

At the JavaOne event, Oracle also detailed its plans for Java EE 8. “For Java EE 8, we are behind schedule,” said Anil Gaur, group vice president of engineering at Oracle. “We’re in the middle of some replanning because not everything we proposed (in JSR 366) is equally relevant now. Once we get feedback, we’ll finalize that. Our goal is to finalize and ship sometime next year.”
