Gradle, Google’s recommended Android build system, has added support for JetBrains’ Kotlin language. In the past, Gradle supported Groovy, and this gives the mobile development industry another option. According to Gradle CEO Hans Dockter, Kotlin offers some advantages related to performance, quality and IDE support.

Miko Matsumura, chief marketing officer at Gradle, added, “The notion behind this is really just to make build programming into a first-class engineering discipline and move it away from its historical legacy. In the past, typically, this has been done with XML configuration or even with shell scripting. It’s moved up in the world of programming.”
