Google has announced that its Cloud Platform has been certified to comply with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards (DSS). In layman’s terms, this means it’s now acceptable for developers to use Google’s cloud development platform to write and run applications that store credit card data.

“PCI DSS provides a comprehensive and robust security framework for securing credit card information and transactions,” blogged Google product manager Matthew O’Connor. “Google is using these third-party audited standards to deliver a platform on which application developers can create and operate their own secure and compliant solutions.”

Industry watchers say this certification will enable Google to better compete with cloud computing industry leader Amazon Web Services (AWS).
