Google Play Q1 Downloads 70% Higher Than iOS

  • By Developer.com Staff

A new report from App Annie says that during the first quarter of 2015, Google Play had 70 percent more downloads than Apple's App Store did. However, the report added that the iOS App Store generated about 70 percent more revenue than Google Play during the same time period.

"Unsurprisingly, emerging markets like Mexico, Turkey, Brazil and Indonesia were the primary drivers of Google Play's growth. As the population of first time smartphone buyers in these countries reaches critical mass, the Android ecosystem is likely to be a major beneficiary," App Annie said.

A separate report from advisory firm Digi-Capital paints a slightly different picture of the revenue battle. It noted that in China alternative Android app stores have a very strong presence. If you add these alternative stores to Google Play, Android had higher worldwide revenue than iOS.
