Google has announced that it will become a full member of the Open Invention Network (OIN). The group helps protect and promote open source software, particularly Linux, through cross-licensing.

"Linux and open source are at the core of the software industry. Protecting open source is critical to us, our users, and to the ongoing health of the Internet," said Google's Chris DiBona. "We’re proud of our new role within OIN."

Other full members of the OIN include IBM, NEC, Novel, Philips, Red Hat and Sony.
