Google is shutting down Google Code, its hosting repository for open source projects. In a letter to developers with projects on the site, Google noted that “lately, the administrative load has consisted almost exclusively of abuse management,” and ultimately, the company decided the site was more trouble than it was worth.

Google Code was established in 2006 as an alternative to SourceForge. Since then, GitHub has become the predominant repository for open source projects, and Google even hosts its own open source projects at GitHub rather than Google Code.

Google Code is no longer accepting new projects, and existing downloads will be available only until January 26, 2016.
