Bowing to pressure from disgruntled employees, Google has announced that it will no longer be participating in Project Maven, a Pentagon project aimed at using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze footage from drone cameras. However, the company is not giving up all its government work. “We want to be clear that while we are not developing AI for use in weapons, we will continue our work with governments and the military in many other areas,” Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai blogged.

The company also outlined its ethics policy for AI work. It said that AI projects must be socially beneficial, must be accountable to people, and not be related to weapons or other technologies that could cause harm.
