Google Calls for New Cloud Data Regulations

In a speech at Washington, D.C.'s Heritage Foundation, Google general counsel Kent Walker called for changes in the laws regulating government access to cloud computing data. He said that current legislation serves neither governments or their people well because the laws hamper the appropriate flow of data to law enforcement while also encroaching on user privacy.

"The laws that govern evidence-gathering on the Internet were written before the Information Revolution," Walker said. "These rules are due for a fundamental realignment in light of the rapid growth of technology that relies on the cloud [and] the very real security threats that face people and communities."

Google is proposing a new regulatory framework that would control U.S. and international access to data stored on cloud computing services.
