Gingerbread Still Accounts for 20% of Android Devices

Is Gingerbread becoming the XP of the Android world? In the latest Android fragmentation report, Gingerbread, which was first released in 2010, still accounts for 20 percent of devices. The most common version of Android was Jelly Bean with 60.3 percent of devices. The newest version, KitKat, has just 1.8 percent of devices.

Why does Gingerbread continue to be so popular? Many manufacturers use it on low-cost handsets, and Gingerbread is also on many phones that can't be updated. It may take some time before people stop using Gingerbread, so mobile development firms will need to continue writing apps that support the four-year-old platform if they want to reach a large audience of Android users.
