A new report from Gartner predicts that manufacturers will ship 2.3 million PCs, smartphones and other devices this year, a 0.3 percent decline from last year. For 2018, the firm forecasts 1.8 percent growth.

“Overall, the shipment growth of the device market is steady for the first time in many years,” said Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner. “PC shipments are slightly lower while phone shipments are slightly higher — leading to a slight downward revision in shipments from the previous forecast.”

The good news for mobile development firms is that the company believes smartphone sales will increase 5 percent this year. Sales of “basic” smartphones could be especially strong with an increase of 6.8 percent.
