Fewer Developers Using Java

  • By Developer.com Staff

According to the October 2011 version of the Tiobe Programming Community Index, Java's market share dropped from 18.8 percent in August to 17.9 percent in September. It's still number one for now, but if the trend continues, next month C will be the most popular programming language. (In September, 17.7 percent of developers used C, making it the second most popular.)

Tiobe's Paul Jansen expects Java to continue to slide down the rankings over the long term. "This downward trend is probably caused by the fact that the Java language evolves too slowly compared to other languages, such as C#," he said.

The complete top 10 in the index included the following:

  1. Java
  2. C
  3. C++
  4. PHP
  5. C#
  6. Objective-C
  7. Visual Basic
  8. Python
  9. Perl
  10. JavaScript
