Famo.us co-founders Steve Newcomb and Mark Lu want to enable developers to use JavaScript to build Web apps that are much more dynamic and responsive than ever before. The pair first planned to build a new website using HTML 5, but decided the technology just wasn’t ready. Newcomb compared HTML 5 to “working with a car that has a lawn mower for an engine.”

So instead, the pair set out to build a better engine. They found a way to use JavaScript to provide the performance they wanted without typical bottlenecks. In its first test, “we were 14 times faster than compiled C in Chrome in the very first test with only a 65K footprint,” explained Newcomb.

The startup now plans to offer a core made up of four engines that improve JavaScript performance without the need for plug-ins, as well as templates and widgets for rapid application development.
