Facebook Releases Programming Language Called ‘Hack’

Facebook has announced the release of a new programming language called Hack that’s an alternative to PHP. In fact, Facebook says it has replaced most of its own PHP code with Hack over the last twelve months.

In essence, Hack adds static typing to PHP (much as Microsoft’s TypeScript adds static typing to JavaScript), which provides greater security. Two other notable differences are Hack’s support for Collections and the ability to use lambda expressions to create closures. According to a Facebook blog post, the lambda expressions require “a fewer number of keystrokes, which is a big win for productivity.”
